Graduate Training in Neuropsychology
According to the Houston Conference, specialization in clinical neuropsychology should being at the graduate level. It is important to complete courses in generic psychology and the clinical core to establish foundations for the study of brain-behavior relationships. It is also essential for students interested in becoming clinical neuropsychologists to study areas related to brain-behavior relationships. Although there is variability between doctoral programs in the degree to which foundations of brain-behavior relationships and clinical neuropsychology practice are emphasized, graduate students should possess knowledge in the following four core areas:
1. Generic Psychology Core 2. Generic Clinical Core 3. Foundations for the study of brain-behavior relationships 4. Foundations for the practice of clinical neuropsychology If you are interested in becoming a neuropsychologist and would like to ensure that you cover all four core areas during your graduate education, you should declare a concentration in clinical psychology and select electives that will provide a foundation for the study of brain-behavior relationships. To learn how to concentrate in clinical neuropsychology at Antioch, see Concentration. Because Antioch is a professional school, it is also important to make sure you have a well-rounded variety of training experiences when applying to internships. It is recommenced for students to gain some experience with psychotherapy, even if you might not want to do psychotherapy in the future.
